Northeast China consists of three provinces and the eastern part of Inner Mongolia. If you look at a map, you will see that China looks like a chicken and Northeastern China is the chicken’s head.

Manchuria is as large as most of Europe.
满洲的面积差不多同一多半的欧洲面积一样大。

History  历史

The Koreans, the Mongols, the Manchu, the Chinese, the Russians and then the Japanese fought over Manchuria for hundreds of years because the northeast is so rich in minerals, coal, lumber, fish, agriculture and for the last 100 years—industry.
韩国人、蒙古人、满族人、中国人、俄国人和日本人争战于满洲数百年，因为东北在过去100年里矿物质、煤、木材、鱼类、农业等工农业物矿及其丰富。

China’s Rust belt

The critics, and there are many—in China and out—consider the northeast as China’s rustbelt, a powerhouse in its day but it is now a backwater where the young and the talented need to  move south, or emigrate, for a better life.

中国境内外的评论家们，其中很多人将东北地区视为铁锈地带，那个年代的工业重地当时是一潭死水,需年轻有为的人才南下或迁移，寻求美好生活。

That was true in the 1990’s and early in this century. However, it is time to take another look. With government help, the northeast is reforming its economy and is now a model that the American and Canadian Rust Belts should study to see how they too could recover from the decline of their traditional coal mining and steel making sectors.

在20世纪90年代和本世纪初，情况确实如此。然而,现在则是另一番景象。在政府的帮助下,东北正在改革。现在，美国和加拿大的锈带公司应该研究一种模式，看看他们如何也能从传统的煤炭开采和炼钢行业的衰退中恢复过来。

Planning my vacations
我的假期规划

I start my vacations in Changchun. It is in the centre of Manchuria. Once there, I check the 14-day weather report.
度假将始于长春。这里位于“满洲国”的中心。一旦到达哪里，我将检索14天的天气预报。

I can travel north to Harbin, travel southeast to Yanji or Hunchun, travel south to Heaven Lake, go southwest to Dandong or Dalian or take the train west to Jinzhou.
我可以北行至哈尔滨，南行至延吉或珲春，再向南至长白山天池，西南至丹东或大连，或乘列车西行至锦州。

In all directions, there are many interesting places to visit. I can also stay in Changchun, as there is a lot to see in that city.
四面八方都有很多地方可以浏览。也可驻足长春，因为那里也有很多地方值得一看。

All these cities are connected to Changchun by high-speed rail so I go where the sun is shining and where rainy days won’t spoil my vacation.The train trips takes from 35 minutes to a maximum of four hours.
所有这些城市全部通过高速铁路与长春连接，所以无论晴雨天气都不会影响我的旅行。高铁行程从35分钟到最长4小时不等。

Harbin 哈尔滨

Harbiners say that if you dream of visiting Moscow, Paris and Rome all in one shot but can't afford it, you should consider their city as a viable alternative, since it offers a flavour of all three of these famous cities, under one roof, as it were, and considerably cheaper!
据哈尔滨人说，如果你梦想一下子要去莫斯科、巴黎和罗马，但旅费负担不起，应该把哈尔滨看作是一个可行的选择，因为该城市具备了在同一屋檐下的这三大著名城市的风格，并且，价格便宜很多！

Harbin’s Central Street

Harbin’s Central Street retained the old Russian-built buildings and cobblestone road. It is now China’s longest pedestrian mall.
哈尔滨的中央大街保留了老式的俄国建筑和鹅卵石路。它是现在中国最长的步行购物中心。

Visiting Harbin is like visiting St. Petersburg or Moscow. Old Eastern Orthodox churches help give Harbin a Russian look.
参观哈尔滨如同参观圣彼得堡或者莫斯科，古老的东正教教堂为哈尔滨提供了俄罗斯风格建筑。

This Russian restaurant was established in 1914. It serves the best cabbage rolls I have ever eaten.

The Gogal Book store and a Russian restaurant makes it feel that you have gone back in history.

Harbin is not trapped in the past. It is also home of futuristic buildings, bridges and roads. It also has the most spectacular Ice Festival in the world.

Changchun 长春

Changchun is the automobile-manufacturing centre of China. This is a model of the FAW-Volkswagen plant in Changchun. 
长春是中国的汽车制造工业中心。汽车工业的典范-长春一汽-大众。

It has historical Japanese-built palaces and government buildings.  
长春有历史上日本建造的宫殿和政府大楼。

The 461 Peoples’ Liberation Army (Air Force) hospital was built in 1936 by the Japanese as the Shinkyo Central Courthouse.

该建筑建立于1936年，当时作为日本新京中央法院。现为中国人民解放军461医院（空军）。

A new residential district in the northeast part of the city has wide streets, pedestrian overpasses, parks, elevated roads and a light-rail line. This entire public infrastructure is in place while the district is still under construction.

东北地区某城市的一个住宅新区，附近有四通八达的街道、行人立交桥、公园、高架道路和轻轨线路。整个公共基础设施已经到位，该区仍在建设中。

At the beginning of May, it was so warm; people were boating and swimming in South Lake.
5月之初的南湖如此温暖；人们在湖上荡舟和游泳。

Changchun’s parks are a delight.
长春的公园使人心情愉悦。

The city has a large number of excellent restaurants.
长春有很多出色的餐馆

This is the corridor leading to the furniture section of the EuroAsia Shopping Mall. It claims to be the largest shopping mall in the world. I don’t doubt it. Can you see the end of this corridor?
这是EuroAsia卖场购物中心里一条通向家具城的通道。欧亚卖场被称为世界最大的购物中心，我毫不怀疑。您能看到这条通道的尽头吗？

Anshan 鞍山

Anshan is one of the world’s great steel manufacturing cities. (This main street is twelve-lanes wide.) It is also the best place in China to buy jade as the local market has very large selections at the best prices.
鞍山是一座世界上最伟大的钢铁制造业城市。（主街有十二条巷道宽）。这也是中国购买玉石的最佳地点，以当地市场的最优价格经营，选择空间非常大。

New condos are also being built in the outskirts of Anshan. It looks impressive for a city that western reporters say is in decline.

Dandong 丹东

Dandong is a small city on the Yalu River that has one of the original Great Walls, the Broken Bridge and it is the gateway to North Korea.
丹东是鸭绿江岸有着最原始长城的一座小城市，断桥，它是通往朝鲜的门户。

The Friendship Bridge is the main transportation link between North Korea and the rest of the world.
友谊大桥是一主要的交通要道，与朝鲜和世界其它地区之间接轨。

Chinese tourists rent Korean traditional dresses. North Korea is behind them, just across the river.
中国游客租用韩国传统服饰。他们身后的河对岸是北朝鲜。

In Dandong, you can buy North Korean goods, eat in North Korean restaurants and drink North Korean beer.
在丹东，您可以购买北朝鲜货物，品北朝鲜餐馆美食和饮用北朝鲜啤酒。

Dalian 大连

The Xinghai Bay Cross-Sea Bridge in Dalian has a total length of 6.8 kilometres with two four-lane roadways, one in each direction.

Dalian is one of China’s most beautiful cities. It has industry, shipbuilding, an important seaport and gorgeous scenery.

Jinzhou 锦州

Jinzhou has ancient temples, museums and Bijia Mountain—the site of Pangu's Creation of the World. (The Chinese version of the Bible’s Garden of Eden.) 。
锦州有古老的寺庙、博物馆和笔架山-盘古创造世界的所在地。（《圣经》的《伊甸园》中文版）。

During most times of the day, Bijiashan can only be accessed by boat but at low tide, there is a 10 metre-wide land bridge to the island.
在白天的大部分时间里，笔架山只能乘船到达，在落潮时，有一座10米宽的陆桥通往该岛。

I also hope to visit Shenyang, the home of a second Forbidden City, and the nearby cities of Tieling, Fushan and Benxi.
