See North Korea from the Great Wall

Dandong's Tiger Mountain is not only a great attraction on its own but it also gives a second way of peering into North Korea.

To get to Tiger Mountain, we drive east from Dandong. On the way, we see more North Korean villages that follow the Yalu River.

We pass by the North Korean border fencing and fortified guard towers.

More border guard towers and fencing.

Tiger Mountain got its name from the twin peaks at the top. They look like tiger ears.

After a half-hour bus ride, we reach the Great Wall.

First you must climb up to the top of the Great Wall. Then you need to climb up the wall to the very top of Tiger Mountain. It will take you a couple of hours.

As you climb up, the scenery becomes more beautiful.

There is a lot of climbing to get to the top.

When you look down, you can see how steep the stairs are. You have to be careful on the way down.

Now I have reached the top of Tiger Mountain. I am looking east. On my left is China. North Korea is on the right side of the Yalu River.

Now we are looking southeast into North Korea. You can see a North Korean village on the right.

This North Korean village in on an island in the middle of the Yalu River.

This is a photograph of North Korean farm buildings.

Across the river, there is another North Korean village.

There are some industrial buildings among the residential homes.

This looks like rich farmland.

In the bottom right of this photograph you can see the tops of homes in a farming village. The winters are cold so I think that the homes are built in the low areas so they are protected from the strong cold winds.

North Korea is to the left of the Yalu River and China is on the right side.
In China, there is a paved two-lane road, automobiles, greenhouses, parks and businesses. The signs of prosperity are obvious. These are all missing on the North Korean side of the river.
My Chinese friends tell me that older Chinese go to North Korea to reminisce about what life was like in the days before the 40 years of opening up and the younger Chinese go to North Korea to see what life was like for their parents.

Looking west, we have a better look at Dandong, which is several kilometres in the distance. It is a modern city of high-rise condominiums, office towers and beautiful parks.
Sinuiji, to the south is badly underdeveloped. Instead of owning cars, the North Koreans ride bicycles.
From the top of Tiger Mountain, by looking south then turning your head to the west, you can see the tremendous progress China has made during the 40 Years of Reform and Opening Up.
